This is not your typical getaway in Guatemala - you'll need to be in good physical and mental shape to handle the rugged terrain, steep inclines, and changing weather conditions. The trek will take you deep into the heart of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, where you'll explore ancient trails roamed by only the local communities that thrive in the area and exotic wildlife. You'll be trekking through dense jungle, crossing streams and creeks, and climbing steep hills, covering 20 to 25 km each day in temperatures ranging from 36° to 42° Celsius with humidity around 85%.

This experience begins from Flores island in Peten. 

Itinerary

  • You'll depart from Flores Island and will meet your expert guides and will travel to the Carmelita community. Once you arrive you’ll begin the trek to El Guacute camp, the first rest stop where lunch will be enjoyed. Continue the trek to El Tintal, the next archaeological site and campsite for the night. Relax with the jungle sounds and enjoy dinner outside.

  • After fueling up with a hearty camp breakfast, you'll journey deep into the lush jungle and continue your way to the city of El Mirador. Lunch will be en route. Today you’ll explore the archaeological site of La Muerta, followed by your arrival at off the beaten track-El Mirador. The reward will be admiring sunset from El Tigre Pyramid. The campsite for the night will be at El Mirador.

  • Today you’ll be mesmerized as you explore the city of El Mirador and the exotic jungle sounds surround you. Keep an eye out for jaguars and tapirs as you follow the impressive Maya trails. You'll be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of sunset and reaching the peak of La Danta pyramid.

  • Start the trek back to El Tintal. In this occasion you will have the opportunity to tour the site upon arrival, followed by an evening in the site’s camp.

  • You’ve made it to the last leg of your adventure. Today you’ll trek back to Carmelita, where you’ll enjoy a farewell lunch upon arrival and celebrate conquering this unforgettable expedition. Expect to be back at Flores Island in the late afternoon.
